“I have a good friend that told me her ‘down there’ kind of stinks ["why does my vagina smell fishy?!"]. Now she has a boyfriend, they’ve been together for a while and she recently told me that they are thinking of having sex, but shes worried about her down there problem.. i didn’t know what to say because ive never had to experience that.. HELP. lol what do i say?”

First, congratulations on keeping your own vag smelling nice. As for your friend’s, though, not so good… A stinky hoo-ha can be a bit of a turn-off. If you guys end up talking about it again, tell her you found a few tips to help make it smell better:

It’s not supposed to smell like a fresh meadow after warm summer rain (or whatever). So don’t have unreasonable expectations. It’s a vag. And it’s going to smell like one. But hopefully, it can end up smelling like a good vag instead of a fishing boat.

If it started being smelly all of a sudden, that could mean she developed an infection. Green, grey, or clumpy white discharge (blech!) means there’s probably something wrong down there, and she should definitely get it checked out by a doctor. (But if that’s not the case and it’s always been kinda stinky, read on.)

DO NOT douche (i.e. spray water up in there). That can kill the good bacteria that normally eat the stink. It can also cause yeast infections, which smell REALLY bad.

Change tampons every 3 to 4 hours when you’re… you know.

Let it breathe! Think of it like a little pet. It needs to get out every once in a while for some fresh air. Or else it can get all mouldy. Not wearing panties at night can help. And wearing cotton instead of silky polyester panties during the day is good too. Also, change panties every day (I hope nobody needed to be told that).

Don’t scent your vag! Perfumed tampons, pads, and deodorant sprays can cause irritation, which make things even more smelly.

Wipe front to back. This is VagCare 101, but sometimes people forget. If you get any poop in there, it’ll grow stink-inducing bacteria. And that’s really gross.

Wash it gently. Like a kitty cat. Use just water or the purest soap you can find (like Ivory or Dove). Again, don’t use scented soaps. And don’t scrub it too hard! Irritation can also the stinkin.

Wash it every day. That way the fishy bacteria can’t build up.

1) Dress up like a celebrity couple, Tweet that they’ve been spotted in your area, and go out for dinner. This works best around upscale venues.

2) Rent some time at a cheap recording studio and produce your own hit single. Naturally, you’ll be posting it on Facebook together. Who knows—maybe you’ll even get signed.

3) Drive to another city with no map or GPS. Get lost, and try to find your way home. If you’re stuck, make up secret identities and ask strangers for directions.

4) Visit a small pizza restaurant. Secretly send word to the chef that you’re on a very important date, and see if he’ll bake your pizza in the shape of a heart. This makes for such a cute surprise.

5) Choose a random address in the phone book and send an elaborate post card. Draw and design it together, stick on pictures, add favorite quotes, and drop it in the mail.

6) Take turns writing lines of a poem. Put it in a corked bottle, and let it drift away in the water. One day, another couple might find it. Include your email addresses, too.

7) Make puppets out of old socks. Then go to a movie, sit at the back row, and put on a silent play in front of the projector before the movie starts.

8) Go to a book store together and leave little notes in the best sections of your favorite novels. Future readers will love the surprise.

9) Hand out free crackers at a local soup kitchen and make friends with all the patrons. You’ll feel great brightening up some people’s days.

10) Find a public restroom, unravel the toilet paper, and write a cute romantic message. Roll it back up for the next unsuspecting patron. It’ll make someone’s day, guaranteed.

11) Call a local radio station and ask them to dedicate a song for you, and tell them a short story about your most amazing date. It’s such a cute request, they’ll probably do it.

12) Build a fort out of your sofa with blankets and pillows—just like when you were kids. Try to crawl inside without it falling down. Post your adventure on YouTube.

13) Walk to the nearest grocery store, split up and buy random ingredients. Get as much as you can for $20. When you get home, try to make something using everything you bought.

14) Go the nearest intercity bus station and buy tickets for the first one leaving. Don’t check the destination. And spend the day exploring a totally new place.

If now were forever what song would you sing?
The chirp of the birds with a soft morning’s ring
Would you look to the sunset and stars burning slow
Or run to the meadow, where brown wheat stalks blow
And the old farmer smiles and the white sheep go
Amid rolling hills, treading new snow

If now were forever what day would it be?
A large feast of honour for all men to see
Or meek singing prelude to eternity
Would you wish on a star and give it a name
Would you hold my hand close until the wish came

If now were forever what breath would you hold?
Your first newborn cry to the wind, living bold
Or last dying gasp and the story it told
When the world saw you there with new dawning sun
A new life, and heart, and forever begun

If now were forever I would sing of skies
Of birds’ silent chirps, of endless goodbyes
I would look to the sunset and see your soft face
That burns in my heart to heaven’s disgrace
I would run in the meadow, laughing with you
I would cry in your arms, when time had come due
My day would be our day, and our day withal
I would wish on a star and reach up so tall
I would steal it for you, straight down from the air
And name it for you, holding you there

My breath I would hold for ever and ever
To you softly crying, never say never
And knowing that soon, the time would be near
When I must depart and in death leave you here
My heart fully filled with times always spent
With a smile on my face, not a day when I went
Without a warm glance or loving soft gaze
Or time when the world was a mere spinning haze
No time when I left you with unfulfilled heart
No day when I met you without a fresh start
For every live moment with you was a dream
And dying tonight, what more could it seem?
For bliss now to fade and collapse into dust
If now were forever and leaving a must
Days would kill nights that nights would kill days
With life behind life and death beyond gaze
If now were forever no now would suffice
Forever be gone, please future entice
The clocks to cease spinning; world to stop reel
Please heart, don’t follow, and leave life surreal
If now were forever, for ever and more
My heart I do leave you, my future implore
My last words I feed you, the feelings I bore
Your heartbeat, my soul, I forever adore.

What is true love? If you have to ask, you haven’t found it yet. But we can tell you what to expect: the feeling that you have already accomplished everything that matters. When you realize you’ve found the person of your dreams, the first “hello” is your happy ending. It’s the realization that everything you’ve been searching for—everything you’ve been hoping for—actually exists. And you’re consumed, not by lust or infatuation, and not by some quixotic notion of romantic fulfillment, but by the simple rhythmic beating of another person’s heart. When you realize the meaning of true love, you become captivated, bound, and destined to a project bigger than yourself. And giving happiness and protection to that person matters, for the first time, more than your own life.

Would you die for her? Would you die for him? Would you give up everything as long as you knew you could be together? If she lost her smile, if he lost his charm—if every spark of attraction were suddenly lost, would you feel the same? Most people will never know what it means to say “yes.” But if you can say, in blatant honesty, that nothing in the world could matter more than the relationship you have, and that there is nothing in the world you wouldn’t give to protect it, then maybe—just maybe—you can answer the question: “What is true love?”

Yet maybe there is no answer. Maybe it’s just a feeling, something we’re not supposed to understand or define. But as long as we can hope for love, as long as we endeavor to meet the void in our hearts that only true love fulfills, the question will remain.

So as long as it does, let’s give it a shot. Would you take a bullet for her? Would you die for him? Do you accept that she will always have flaws? Do you accept that you can’t change him? Would you trust her with your deepest secrets? Could you give him your whole heart, knowing that if he breaks it you will have nothing left? If you can answer yes to all of the above, you’re a hero in the arms of love.

True love means to give and not to expect. It means to trust and not to control. It means to laugh for no reason, to adore with abandon, to dance like you have wings, and to know that sometimes when excitement fades or emergencies arise that there will be duty on your shoulders. And true love is to love no less when hours and days or years must pass of sacrifice. Because the promise of love is made in good times but proven in hardship. So if she lost her legs, if he lost his voice, would your love prevail then? If in the worst of circumstances everything you had learned to adore were suddenly torn away, would you admire her then?
